The email below is forwarded exactly as it was sent in 2012… Brian O was running the coolest new stuff at DoublePositive and John Ferber was on the DoublePositive Board of Directors at the time (soon to be replaced
by Dave Blundin as DoublePositive Board Member later that same year).
Earlier today, my sister Tara Schoberg
http://www.abovo42.com/tschoberg@hotmail.com texted me (and my parents) a quote/snippet from the article interview text from me in 2001:
“Music will be treated as a service, rather than as a product,” he predicts. “Down the road, every song ever recorded could be played and heard anytime, anywhere, via portable cellular accessibility, with
the consumer paying a monthly fee.”
I quipped back… “Oh yeah. YouTube was my idea too. ;-)”
In a world of monthly free and paid subscription options on Pandora, Spotify, Apple Music, etc., the 2001 prediction appears quite prescient.
However… Two confessions:
1.
“Down the road” is not a prediction of “when.” There are a lot of entrepreneurs out there that claim that YouTube was their idea too, but they had the wrong timing. Timing (and execution) is everything
and I got the timing of online music wrong (but so did Uber Founder/CEO Travis Kalanick FWIW).
2.
I may have been a 32-year old visionary, but I was not a poet in this quote, rather I was a parrot.
I learned these concepts in the quote almost verbatim from a true visionary, Jim Griffin:

https://www.linkedin.com/in/onehouse/
Jim was a ListenSmart.com Board Member and one of the smartest minds in the space – to this day.
It’s always interesting to look at things that occurred in 2001, but before 9/11.
I love using Abovo42.com as a free/simple blog for my email to document and archive stuff like this. :-)

I cleaned out my basement over the weekend and came across an old magazine that featured:
The CEO of e.magination
The founders of Advertising.com
And…
The CEO of ListenSmart.com
All in the same issue.
Crazy.
